TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC JOURNALISM
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of music journalism nor to determine in advance what such a philosophy must be. A field concerned with journalism must remain responsive to practices differing in medium, history, audience, musical knowledge, rhetorical form, economic condition, and institutional position. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both singular journalistic encounters and the structures through which they become public.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of music journalism may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the nature of criticism, the grounds of authority, the status of objectivity, the relation between description and judgement, the responsibilities of representation, or journalism’s public function. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which music journalism understands its work.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become more accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear, whose experience they authorise, what they render invisible, and how journalistic practice might transform the terms through which musical culture becomes publicly intelligible. The residency begins from this task and invites participants to undertake it collectively.
